As matcha’s less caffeinated little brother, hojicha powder shares matcha’s versatility in making any tea-flavored goodie under the sun, from lattes to obscure hojicha milk jam recipes. Hojicha powder is a rare find, but there are plenty of global and Japanese tea brands that have caught on to its rising popularity and begun stocking it.

Why do hojicha powder prices range so much?

Prices for hojicha powder vary greatly from brand to brand, but it's not all just chalked up to the company and quality. The type of Japanese green tea used in making the hojicha largely determines the end price.

Typically, bancha or kukicha is roasted to make hojicha [1]. These teas contain leftover parts of the tea plant or are from harvests later in the year. The result is a less nutritious tea that is also often cheaper than sencha, the most common Japanese green tea.

When hojicha uses sencha or any other pricier, higher quality tea outside the norm, you can expect the price to also be a bit higher. This is also why matcha, which uses a more labor intensive green tea called tencha, is also more expensive than your run-off-the-mill green tea!
