With hundreds of boutique tea companies in the United States alone, sifting through the vast ocean of options to fish out a shiny new brand to try takes a truly dedicated tea aficionado. That’s why any time a small tea company with a unique angle lands in my lap, I like to introduce it to fellow tea lovers.

After being contacted by The Tea Can Company’s founder and owner, Donna McCafferty, I learned all about this tea gift set curator, wholesaler, and private labeler from Pennsylvania. Here’s my review on a selection of The Tea Can Company’s many, many tea products!

About The Tea Can Company

A cute “La Tea Dah” sticker greets you when you open a box from The Tea Can Company.

The Tea Can Company has colorful beginnings stemming from owner Donna’s artistic background. It was in a college art class that she had the idea to start the business, combining delicious and aromatic teas with thoughtfully designed packaging. You’ll find an artistic touch on every tea tin and label.

Since opening in 2011, The Tea Can Company has grown into a one-stop-shop for personal and corporate tea gifting needs. They also offer private labeling for weddings, events and companies, wholesale tea, and now a line of CBD tea called HEMPtea.

In the past two years, The Tea Company has seen great success in growing their online and wholesale business. Through several shows a year, Donna is able to connect with buyers and align the company’s products to their needs.

Working with non-profits

In line with the gifting theme, The Tea Can Company works with several non-profits, such as breast cancer support group Unite for HER, to which they donate rebranded overstock tea. During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Tea Can Company also donated thousands of tea cans to hospitals and medical workers.

Through their fundraising program, non-profits can sell The Tea Can Company products as a way to help raise funds for schools, churches, and organizations.

So that’s a bit about the company…

Reviewing the The Tea Can Company’s tea

The Tea Can Company’s tea sachets are 100% biodegradable.

Now for some tea!

For a lower waste alternative and more flexibility, I usually lean towards loose leaf tea over tea bags. While The Tea Can Company has both options, I was thrilled to find out that their tea sachets are 100% plant-based and biodegradable, not plastic. Due to their spacious shape, tea sachets allow tea to steep a lot better. However, many other companies typically use nylon or other plastic materials that have been proven to release microplastics into your tea when steeped, giving the Tea Can Company’s plant-based approach a sustainable edge [1].

I’ll have to check in on the used sachets in my compost bin in a few months to see how they do.

In my big ol’ sampler box from The Tea Can Company, I got to taste a little bit of everything. Because the company’s bread and butter is health and wellness teas, many of their teas incorporate a health focus. As a result, they have tons of creative herbals available, such as Blueberry Cobbler and Garden Therapy.

From fruity black teas to herbals, you’ll find teas covering the entire spectrum. Given this sheer diversity, it’s no wonder that The Tea Can Company does so well in the wholesale and private labeling space.

My personal favorite blends are the Earl Grey Supreme and Rooibos Chai, although the Daily Detox also gets a gold star as a relaxing brew right before bed.

HEMPtea - CBD infused tea

Perhaps the most unique blend was the Caramel Lattea Black Loose Tea from HEMPtea, a line of teas infused with 99% pure CBD. CBD tea is reported to have several benefits, including pain and insomnia relief. As someone who’s never had CDB before, I was not sure what to expect in terms of taste and experience.

After making its rounds among family members (all coffee lovers), the consensus is that this Caramel Lattea Black tea is a hit, with the taste reminiscent of a coffee latte. Of course, the underlying health benefits are a bonus and for any tea drinker interested in CBD, this is a great place to start.

Be sure to check out The Tea Can for your next round of party favors at an event or for a curated tea gift set for any occasion.
