13 cozy tea shops and rooms in Phoenix for tea lovers

Tea is the second most consumed drink in the world after water, yet any tea drinker might agree that it’s hard to find a wide tea selection at cafes and coffee shops. Pre-made chai latte syrups and sweetened matcha powders are staples most everywhere, but where’s the real tea love, guys?

The Phoenix metro area in Arizona has a blossoming coffee shop culture. AZ Central reported a few years ago in 2018 that the 2-mile area of downtown Phoenix alone had 20 independent coffee shops [1]! With this boom have come several mom and pop cafes boasting extensive tea menus for the tea fanatic who isn’t always so keen on coffee options (me ✋).

Here are some of the best tea shops in Phoenix, along with a few tea rooms for the posh tea drinker.

Phoenix tea shops for a casual cup or remote work

These tea shops in and around Phoenix, Arizona are perfect for catching up with friends or getting a bit of work done in a comfy, relaxing environment over a warm cup.

1. Infusion Coffee & Tea (Tempe)

I found out about Infusion Coffee & Tea years ago while a student at ASU. Because it’s a few blocks from campus and tucked away in some side streets, its crowd is a good mix of students and everyone else. At first glance, Infusion is a coffee mecca — it’s the HQ to the International Barista and Coffee Academy (IBCA) and sells its own coffee brand. But Infusion is also a tea drinkers’ paradise and their multi-page tea menu is no joke.

You can order any tea you can think of as either iced or hot. If hot, you’re served an adorable tray with a mini hourglass , cookie, and pot infuser.

📍 Location:

  • 1300 E 8th St Tempe, AZ 85281

2. Cha Cha's Tea Lounge (Phoenix)

For the serious tea purists out there, Cha Cha’s is the place to go. From fun matcha blends to herbals and oolongs, Cha Cha’s really has any tea your heart could desire. They also have an assortment of delicious plant-based desserts and brunch items if you want to come hungry.

📍 Locations:

  • 1229 Grand Ave Phoenix, AZ 85007

3. Matcha Grove (Gilbert)

Matcha Grove is a newer, trendy tea shop in Gilbert that just opened in 2021 and—as the name implies—serves mostly matcha-based drinks. All drinks, desserts, and food items are plant-based and gluten-free. As such, you can choose between, coconut, oat, and almond milk for your matcha lattes. You also choose your natural sweetener or can opt out of one altogether.

Every drink is very thoughtfully created (they even sift the matcha!) and there are tons of fun flavors like Lavender Honey and Strawberry Matcha Lattes.

📍 Location:

  • 81 S McQueen Rd Unit 195 Gilbert, AZ

4. SoZo Coffeehouse (Chandler)

SoZo Coffeehouse is the quintessential coffee shop with live music, events, and those giant arm chairs that you can sink into. There is tons of seating and large tables here, perfect for working remotely and big groups of people. What I love about SoZo as a tea drinker is their large selection of loose leaf teas and the ability to create your own customized latte. The baristas always have fantastic tea recommendations to try something new.

📍 Locations:

  • 1982 N. Alma School Rd Chandler, AZ 85224

5. Bergie's Coffee Roast House (Gilbert)

Admittedly, Bergie’s is a coffee-drinker’s stomping ground, but this shop is just too dang cute to not visit. They have chai and matcha lattes, along with a small selection of loose leaf teas. The coffee shop is a tiny cottage in Downtown Gilbert behind a large, lush garden patio with a ton of seating. Because there is virtually no indoor seating, this is a place to visit during nice weather when you want to soak in some nature.

📍 Locations:

  • 309 N Gilbert Rd, Gilbert, AZ 85234

6. Songbird Coffee & Tea House (Phoenix)

If old Midwest farmhouse vibes are your thing, then definitely get a cup at Songbird Coffee & Tea House. This adorable Downtown Phoenix site has over 25 loose leaf teas to choose from, in addition matcha, chai, and thai tea. They also occasionally host musicians, artists, poets, story tellers, and craft-folk.

📍 Locations:

  • 812 N 3rd St, Phoenix AZ, 85004

7. Matcha Cafe Maiko (Tempe)

This international matcha dessert shop already has locations across three different countries, so its delectable treats have been much anticipated in Tempe. Matcha Cafe Maiko originally started in Hawaii and serves everything from tea to Japanese-inspired desserts like matcha soft serve with mochi.

Matcha Cafe Maiko opened in Tempe in June 2022.

📍 Locations:

  • 920 E University Drive Tempe, AZ 85281

Phoenix tea rooms for a fancier tea affair

If you’re looking for more of a tea experience, rather than a to-go cup, a tea room may be a better fit. From offering tea ceremonies to afternoon tea, the Phoenix metro area has a great selection of tea rooms for a more formal cup.

1. Drink Me! Tea Room (Tempe)

I discovered Drink Me! by total accident after getting lost and turning into a plaza where I saw the words “tea room”. I’ve since been here a number of times and can’t stop telling everyone I know about it. As a self-described “modern twist on afternoon tea”, this Alice in Wonderland tea room serves a full spectrum of offerings, from full afternoon tea service to a simple tea with scones. Their menu is completely plant-based, gluten-free, and made entirely from scratch, while they also serve their own tea blends.

Drink Me! Tea Room is perfect for two or entire parties. I would recommend checking out their adorable pictures.

2. TeaTime Scottsdale (Scottsdale)

TeaTime is essentially a tea drinker’s watering hole, offering everything from loose leaf teas for purchase to classes and afternoon tea. For high tea or afternoon tea, it’s advised to make a reservation at least two days in advance. Host an upcoming party or event at TeaTime or opt for an Afternoon Tea Box for two to take home and enjoy! Located in Old Town Scottsdale, this is a great little place to add to your itinerary and stop by for a look.

📍 Location:

  • 7051 E 5th Ave C Scottsdale, AZ 85251

3. Crowning Glory Tea Room (Fountain Hills)

Crowning Glory takes the British tea tradition of afternoon tea quite seriously. This Fountain Hills tea room has several uniquely decorated parlors representing different regions of the world. Take your afternoon tea in distinct experiences, such as in the Polska parlor with a red poppy motif or in The East parlor with soothing colors and a tranquil air. Crowning Glory is only open Saturdays from 11 - 2, so make sure to reserve your room ahead of time.

4. English Rose Tea Room (Carefree)

Perhaps rather ironically located in Carefree, Arizona, English Rose Tea Room melts away your worries while you’re surrounded by lace and fine china. This tea room is open seven days a week, has a-la-carte menu options to accompany your tea, and etiquette classes for table manners, tea parties, and everyday life.

5. The Pink Door Tea House (Glendale)

The Pink Door Tea House offers a wide afternoon tea menu ranging from a full set to a kid’s friendly option. This tea room was known as Kimberly Ann’s Tea Room for 26 years from its opening until 2020, when it changed ownership [2]. The new owners have been keeping the rich afternoon tea tradition alive and remodeled the whole shop for a fresh new look—and pink door.

📍 Location:

  • 7153 N. 59th Avenue Glendale AZ, 85301

6. Japanese Friendship Garden (Phoenix)

While most tea rooms in Phoenix are more about the traditional British tea time fanfare, we cannot forget about the beautiful hidden gem that is the Japanese Friendship Garden’s tea ceremony. The tea ceremony is more of a cultural experience than social event, and is led by trained guides that take you through each step of this age-old Japanese tradition. Even if you’re not a die-hard tea lover, the authentically crafted tea house and garden are enough reason to make a reservation for the monthly tea ceremonies.
