Blooming tea—also known as flowering tea—is a blossoming bouquet of hand-sewn tea and botanicals originating in Fujian, China that unfurls while steeping in hot water [1]. The result is an exquisite visual treat before you even take the first sip of tea. 💐

Unlike other loose leaf tea, blooming tea also uniquely stays clustered together so you can steep without an infuser or tea bag. This makes the aesthetically appealing tea variety an ideal gift for any tea drinker without worrying about what kind of equipment they have at home.

The best blooming tea sets aren’t quite so easy to track down in most brick-and-mortar stores. So, here are a few specialty tea shops online where you can find an abundant selection of blooming tea!

Teabloom is the blooming tea fairy, with the tea company popping up left and right for any search around blooming tea. And it’s no wonder, because Teabloom’s bread and butter is blooming tea and see-through glass teaware specially designed to showcase the flowering tea bouquets with safe borosilicate glass.

There’s an assortment of green tea flavors and arrangements to choose from, including samples or canisters of jasmine, berry, heart-shaped, and fruity varieties.

2. Adiago

Adagio is well-known for its incredibly massive selection of loose leaf tea, tea cookies, teaware, and anything else a tea drinker could ever wish for—including blooming tea! Adagio has three flowering tea types to choose from: red bloom (black tea), white bloom (white tea), and jasmine (green tea), or a combination of all three. While most blooming tea tends to use green tea, Adagio uniquely has a black and white tea variety to try.

3. Numi

Numi has built a more recognizable name for itself on grocery store shelves, but even so you’ll be hard pressed to find its flowering tea sets offline. Numi has a tantalizing lineup of flowering tea gift sets on its website that includes glass teapots, which are perfect for first time blooming tea drinkers or gifting. You can also just get the flowering tea balls without teaware if you prefer.

My first introduction to blooming tea years ago was actually through a box of Numi’s Petite Bouquet, gifted by a friend!

Another well-rounded tea company with a wide online selection, Art of Tea also has a singular blooming tea option. The “Halo Blooming Tea” consists of white tea infused with blueberry and peach essence, topped off with amaranth and jasmine flowers. While this is the only variety sold by Art of Tea, it comes with 10 blooming tea balls and has drummed up positive reviews.

Similarly to Teabloom, blooming tea makes up Teaposy’s main product line, giving customers a colorful selection of flavors and glass teaware to choose from. To ensure quality tea, Teaposy works directly with tea farms and factories to source its products. Shop by bouquet design or buy a medley of flavors.

When it come to aesthetically pleasing tea brands, Par Avion Tea excels in the packaging department. Each tea is boxed in beautifully designed colors and patterns with a playful name. Their blooming tea is called Fairy Bomb, and while there isn’t too much information available on the tea itself, the fun presentation alone is enough to sell.

I’ve also written about Par Avion Tea for their tea subscription box.

Honorable mentions

While you can’t buy flowering tea sets at these companies below, they’re still worth the mention for their role in the blooming tea world!

Teavana (Discontinued)

A part of Teavana’s former tea empire before being discontinued by Starbucks was blooming tea. Starbucks made the call to close down the mall-based chain in 2017 due to underperformance. Presently the brand hangs on by a thread in Starbucks locations with tea sachets and iced teas [2]. Unfortunately, its blooming tea lines didn’t make the cut and are no longer available.

Primula (Glass teaware)

While you won’t find actual blooming tea balls here, Primula is known for its top-notch teaware like teapots and steeping sets. They have a few unique glass options for steeping blooming tea that go beyond the classic all-glass teapot.
